The 5 lessons traveling teaches us (and that we also find when we stop)
Reflections shared during a wellness day at Casa Ballena to welcome the summer solstice and explore the value of self-care, presence, and conscious travel.
On June 7th, we gathered at Casa Ballena, a wellness space located in the heart of La Pedriza, to celebrate a very special day in preparation for the summer solstice.
Just a few kilometers from Madrid, the landscape changes completely. The rocks, vegetation, and silence quickly leave the city's hustle and bustle behind. Surrounded by nature, Casa Ballena offers that unusual feeling of being far away without having traveled a great distance. A perfect place to gain perspective, slow down, and connect with what usually remains hidden beneath everyday noise.
The day was conceived with the intention of creating a small wellness retreat where self-care could be approached from different perspectives: the body, the skin, breathing, seasonal eating, rest, and also the way we relate to the world around us when we travel.
A particularly relevant reflection in the weeks leading up to the summer solstice, a time associated with movement, travel, and holidays, when much of the population prepares to travel.
It was a small day trip. An open itinerary, with structure but without rigidity, leaving room for surprise. Just like many of the trips we take.
A summer welcome from body and nature
Seasons influence the way we inhabit our bodies.
The arrival of summer brings a change in energy and needs. That's why the meeting's proposal was to accompany this transition with awareness, dedicating time to listen to what is usually relegated by daily responsibilities.
Throughout the day, there was space for yoga practice, group dynamics, moments of shared reflection, skincare, mindful eating, rest, and meditation.
Summer is not just about a change of season. It can also be an opportunity to ask ourselves how we want to live the coming months and from what place we want to do so.
The Skin I Live In
One of the most special moments of the day was led by Ana, a health professional and advocate for holistic skin care.
Her proposal stemmed from a simple yet powerful idea: the skin is not just a surface to care for. It is memory, sensitivity, and connection.
Our emotions, experiences, and the way we live in the world are reflected in it. The skin remembers rest, love, fear, and tenderness.
During the meeting, we reflected on the close relationship between the skin and the nervous system, remembering that what calms the soul also transforms the skin.
Sometimes we don't need more products.
We need more rest.
More breathing.
More gentleness.
More presence.
"And that's when the ritual changes and care stops being about appearances to become a conscious act of connection with oneself."

Breathe to return to the present
The day was accompanied by two yoga practices and a final meditation with instructor Alejandra.
An invitation to return to the body through something as simple and as powerful as breath.
Because there is always a bridge between us and our inner selves: breath.
Through it, we can return to the present, to calm, and to who we are when we stop rushing.
It was a time to create a space to disconnect from external and mental noise and reconnect with ourselves.
The 5 lessons travel teaches us
During the afternoon, we shared a reflection inspired by Le Periplo's philosophy and a very simple question:
What has been the journey that changed you the most?
Not the furthest.
Not the most spectacular.
Not the most expensive.
But the one that made you return a slightly different person.
From that conversation, five lessons emerged that appear again and again when we travel.
Movement / Self-knowledge
01 · Movement
Life is movement.
When we stay too long in the same places, with the same routines and dynamics, inertia, patterns, and a certain monotony appear.
Traveling temporarily breaks these structures.
And often, just by moving, something inside us also moves. And things start to happen outside that relate to us inside.
02 · Self-knowledge
Every place gives us back a different version of ourselves
The climate, culture, architecture, gastronomy, or rhythm of life of each place generate different experiences and a perception of ourselves that we might not have known.
There are destinations that inspire us.
Others that expand us.
Others that activate us.
Others that calm us.
And others that make us uncomfortable.
All of them offer us valuable information about who we are and what we need at each moment of our lives.
Traveling is also a form of self-knowledge.
Perspective / Letting go of control / Presence
03 · Perspective
Stepping back helps us see more clearly.
Getting out of our routine allows us to observe it from the outside. For a few days, we stop acting on autopilot and regain the ability to observe.
Many times, we find answers while traveling. Or we simply see more clearly what we already knew and didn't want to look at.
04 · Letting Go of Control
Every trip includes changes of plans, unforeseen events, or unexpected situations.
And that's precisely where one of its greatest lessons emerges: The ability to adapt and to trust.
And to accept that things don't always happen as we had imagined.
05 · Presence
Traveling brings us back to the present moment.
When we travel, we pay more attention.
We observe more.
We listen more.
We savor more.
Something very similar to what happens when we give ourselves space to stop and listen to ourselves.
The journey before the journey
All these reflections are part of the philosophy of conscious travel promoted by Le Periplo. A way of understanding conscious travel through presence, curiosity, and respect for the places we visit.
Starting from a simple question:
Where would you go if you lived there?
Because travel is not just about consuming a destination. It's about engaging with it. Understanding its rhythms. Supporting its local projects. Connecting with its culture. And allowing something of that place to stay with us when we return home.
We understand conscious travel as a way of traveling that seeks to understand rather than consume, observe rather than rush, and connect rather than accumulate.
Le Periplo is born as the journey before the journey: a first immersion in the destination that allows us to get to know its essence even before arriving.
Travel can also be a way of returning to oneself. And perhaps that is the most important journey of all.
A day for sharing
The day was accompanied by Match Tonic Water, which helped us beat the June heat during breaks and conversations. A small gesture that contributed to creating a well-cared for space to share time, ideas, and experiences.
This meeting was made possible thanks to
Casa Ballena / Wellness space located in La Pedriza.
Ana Gónzalez / Holistic health, conscious skin care and well-being through the connection between body, emotions and the nervous system.
Alejandra Echanove · Kalasi Center / Yoga, breathing and meditation as tools to return to the body and the present.
Match Tonic Water / Accompanying this day with a refreshing break for summer days.
Le Periplo / A more conscious way to travel.
